On August 23, 2024, I reported Director of Sports Medicine (now Sport Performance), Will O’Connell, for using trans-phobic comments on Instagram. I received an email from owner, Sam Cortina, stating: "You are correct, those views and opinions are not in line with AZPI's values and we will handle the matter appropriately."
I received no further response to this matter.
Although this comment may not seem like it can cause direct harm, the meaning behind this statement is that this athlete decided to become a transgender woman because she could not compete at the same level as male athletes. This is not only incredibly false, but it is harassment. It is closed-minded opinions like this that cause the most detriment to my community, the LGBTQ community, and listen…even if you have that thought, why post it? Why engage in social media “trolling” with something that knocks another person down? As someone who was a personal trainer and operations manager for a gym for 5 years, I’m appalled that someone in the health and wellness space - someone who should do nothing but lift people up - feels the need to post harmful rhetoric like this. Completely unacceptable and I’d hate to know what he might say to a person who is transgendered, should they show up at your facility for encouragement, professional expertise, and wellness guidance. In fact, after reading his bio on your website, I’m equally perplexed.
“I'm dedicated to helping others achieve their fitness goals, improve their self-esteem, and live healthier lives. I value continuous learning, flexibility, and a positive impact on my community.”
I would love to know what part of Will’s instagram comment helps with one’s self-esteem or leaves a positive impact on the LGBTQ+ community.
And let me be clear - I’m not saying that anyone (Will included) should hold the same views, opinions, and values as me. You’re entitled to your own. But that entitlement doesn’t extend to spreading that type of negativity to an already vulnerable community.
